The Michigan Vietnam Memorial began as a project by the Vietnam Veterans chapter in Mt. Pleasant. The vets constructed a walk bridge connecting the main park to the Pickens ball fields. With the help of volunteers and donations, these veterans built a flag gallery and a series of brick monuments with plaques that bear the names of all Michigan servicemen and one servicewoman who were killed in Vietnam or are still listed as Missing in Action. A one star designation next to the name indicates * Missing in Action. Double stars next to the name indicates **Died in Captivity. An information building was added to the site in 1991 where visitors can acquire information about the Memorial and Vietnam. Island Park is located at the corner of Main and Mosher in downtown Mt. Pleasant.
